Introduction
Kodaikanal, a major hill resort of India, is located at an altitude of 2133
metres in Palani Hills. These exotic hills are the branch of Western Ghat
Mountain range. Waterfalls, wooded slopes and rocky outcrops encircle the
hill station of Kodaikanal. It was founded by American missionaries in 1845.
Relics and artifacts of Paliyans (erstwhile habitants of these hills) are
preserved in the Shenbaganur Museum. It was very difficult to access
Kodaikanal in yesteryears as the people used to reach this place by
bullock-carts and palanquins. But enough infrastructure has come into
existence with the passage of time. It is easily accessible for the visitors
by any mode of transport and summer holiday-homes, clubs, world-class hotels
and civic amenities are now available here. All this makes this hill-resort
suitable for regular tourists, trekkers and honeymooners. A star-shaped lake
is a unique attraction here. Kodaikanal offers numerous tourist attractions
and varied excursions besides the salubrious weather and enchanting natural
beauty.
