Introduction
Ooty or Udagmandalam was rightly described by Jawahar Lal Nehru, first
Prime Minister of India, as 'Queen of Hill Stations'. The capital of Nilgiri
district, Ooty is located amidst Nilgiri Hills at an altitude of 2240 m
above the sea level. It is included among the top hill resorts of India.
Ooty was discovered by John Sullivan, British Collector. It became a popular
summer and weekend getaway for the British very soon onwards. These were the
British who shortened the name of 'Udagamandalam' as 'Ooty'. You will enjoy
the mind-blowing changes in the varieties of vegetation flourishing
everywhere during your journey from Kallar to Coonoor. The mountain train
journey from Mettupalayam to Ooty is a unique tourist attraction for the
visitors. Botanical Gardens, Lamb's rock, Ooty Lake, Kodanadus View Point
and Dodabetta Peak are some major tourist attractions of the exotic tourist
destination.
Climate in Ooty

You
will find very pleasant climate here at Ooty throughout the year. The best
time to visit this hill resort is from February to May and September to
November. The mercury fluctuates between 25 ºC and 10 ºC in the
summer and between 10 ºC and 0 ºC in the winter.
How to Reach Ooty
The hill resort of Ooty is connected with Chennai by a train - Blue
Mountain Express. It leaves Chennai at night and reaches Mettupalayam, a
small town in the foothills of the Nilgiris. A small coal powered train
links this town and Ooty. Some tourists prefer a cab or bus to reach Ooty
little bit earlier. This exotic destination is also easily accessible by
road from neighbouring states-Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala.
Nearest Airport from Ooty
It's nearest airport, Coimbatore airport, is at road travel of
three-and-half hour. This airport is well-linked with almost all the major
airports of the country including Mumbai and Chennai. Mysore airport is
approximately 5 hours away from Ooty by road. But this airport is open only
for the light aircrafts.
